Board Letter

Santa Cruz County began experiencing substantial rains beginning Monday, February 6 and this winter storm continued through February 21, 2017, with minimal breaks in the weather. As a result of this storm event, extensive damage to County maintained roads and parks has occurred and a local state of emergency was declared by your Board on February 7th, 2017. Additional rains are forecasted beginning February 25, 2017 through February 27, 2017 posing a significant potential for continued and increased risk to the life, health and safety of the community. The attached resolution, recommended for your Board’s adoption, continues the existing local state of emergency; a copy of which will be submitted to the State Office of Emergency Services.

The continuation of the declaration of a local emergency is a procedural step in the process of receiving potential State and Federal assistance for our County. If accepted by the State and the Federal government, local governments and private property owners may have access to Federal and State assistance. In accordance with County Code 2.26.040 your Board’s approval of this resolution will allow the State and Federal disaster assistance to potentially be made available for Santa Cruz County.

It is therefore RECOMMENDED that your Board of Supervisors take the following actions:

1.              Adopt  A Resolution of the Board of Supervisors of the County of Santa Cruz Continuing Existence of a Local Emergency; and

2.              Direct staff to forward the resolution to the Governor of California with the request that he proclaim the County of Santa Cruz to be in a continued state of emergency; and further that the Governor request a presidential declaration; and request both State and Federal funding assistance; and

3.              Inform our State legislators of your Board’s actions.
